BULITPRUF BY FAE

FORE AND AFT PINION GEAR ADJUSTMENT

Our Bulitpruf 1 series of nose kits and starters come with a unique system of for and aft adjustment of the pinion. The design allows adjustment of the pinion closer or farther away from the flywheel’s ring gear, not just adjustment further away, as on other starters.

When working on starters the front of the starter is where the pinion gear is.

There is a 4 pack of shims which go on both sides of the clutch assembly, 2 in the front and 2 in the back. This gives a neutral position. To move the pinion closer (fore) place one of the forward shims (closest to the pinion gear) to the rear. Each shim is .030, so it will move the pinion .030 closer to the ring gear, 2 shims = .060  Inversely, moving a shim from the rear (closest to the spring) to the front moves the pinion further away from the ring gear (aft). All 4 shims must be installed, don’t leave any out. The pinion gear should rest a minimum of approximately .050 from the ring gear with a flywheel, .080 with a flex plate.
